In 1927 T. Dawson Brown arranged for the purchase of land of what is now Camp Sandy Beach. Located to the north of Camp Medicine Bow it was built in the late-1920s around Jesse H. Metcalf Lodge, named after United States Senator w:Jesse H. Metcalf (D-RI). Sandy Beach's monikers include "The Youngest and most Spirited Camp" and "The Powerhouse of Yawgoog".
The camp's mascot is Jim the Moose named in honor of former Sandy Beach Camp Director Jim Essex. One morning as a staff prank the staff named everything in the dining hall in honor of Jim. The moose kept the name and he lords over Metcalf Lodge during meals. The camp is also home to five other mascots: Edwin the Eagle, two bananas Jake and Elwood, Stilts and one "crazy" crocodile.
Sandy Beach generally has the largest number of scouts to serve as the camp's capacity for scouts is greater than the other two. Sandy Beach also houses the Reservation Baker who works in the Bake Shoppe attached to the kitchen.
The Camp Baden Powell Provisional program was run at Sandy Beach for a number of years before moving to Camp Medicine Bow.

Program Centers
At Campcraft, the scouts learn to tie knots, survive in the wild, cook all sorts of food in all sorts of ways, become certified instructors, learn skills for their Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class, use the latest in backpacking stoves and learn Low Impact Camping skills. This center is very important, it is what many scout leaders consider to be the "heart" of scouting, and they are right.
Sandy Beach Shooting Sports Department introduces thousands of scouts to what may be their first experience with a firearm or bow. Our equipment is top notch, our program well designed, and our staff implements it well.
As always the Waterfront is a popular spot for the scouts. The staff teaches them and guides them in swimming, lifesaving, canoing, rowing, snorkeling, and lots and lots of fun!! The "Bronze Gods" at the Sandy Beach Water Front (SBWF) teach many scouts to swim. This, by their account, is the most rewarding part of their job.
Note: all shooting sports are under the direction of the Shooting Sports department.
