Captain George Bucklin was born to New York merchant, Thomas P. Bucklin, and Eliza Comstock Bucklin on Feburary, 26, 1843. His family moved to East Providence, RI before the start of the Civil War. George enlisted in the army as a private May 26, 1862 and after a series of assignments was later commissioned as a captain in the Fourteenth Rhode Island Heavy Artillery on September 1, 1863.[1].

Captain Bucklin was a member of many civic organizations such as the Colorado Commandery of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, Bucklin Post, No. 20, Grand Army of the Republic, East Providence, RI, Providence Chess Club, president of the San Antonio Chess Club of San Antonio, TX, San Antonio Club of San Antonio, TX, Metropolitan Club of Denver, CO.[2], the What Cheer Lodge of Masons, Providence, Providence Art Club, Providence Chamber of Commerce, and the Providence Unitarian Club.

Among the sources researched, the Boy Scouts is only mentioned as a deep interest.[3]
